The 2010 NBA coach of the year will have his work cut out for him next year as his team tries to bounce back after they were eliminated in the semi-finals of last years playoffs by the Dallas Mavericks. Scott Brooks currently has a career record of 72-79 but he was able to lead his team to a 50-32 record in 2010. In his first full year as a head coach, he was able to improve their record by 27 games. Though there were other coaches that led teams to better records, Brooks was chosen as the best coach because how he was able to fully turn the franchise around. Brooks was also chosen as the February of 2010 coach of the month when the Thunder had a 9-2 record, the highest winning percentage for a month by the organization since 1997.
One of the best strengths that this coach has is that he knows how to handle the superstars on his team. Though Kevin Durant is known to be one of the nicest guys in the league, it is still a challenge to have the most prolific scorer in the league. As Durant can score at anytime, he will then have to figure out how many touches each player will get. When they reached the playoffs last year, it was the organization 2nd time it reached the playoffs.
Before he was appointed as the head coach, his professional coaching career started with the Denver Nuggets. He was the Nugget’s assistant coach under George Karl for three years from 2003 to 2006. He was able to help the Nuggets make it to the playoffs in all the seasons that he was with the organization. Brooks then became the assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings in 2006.
Brooks was also a great player himself where he played college basketball at UC Irvine and averaged almost 24 points per game. He then went on to play for the Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers before he retired as a player and decided to try coaching. He then became the official head coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder 13 games into the 2008-2009 season.
The Oklahoma City Thunder coach looks to utilize all the star power that he currently has with his roster and looks to bring the young but very talented team back to the playoffs. Though the NBA lockout has more of their players just waiting, Kevin Durant has been seen playing in various charity games to help keep him in shape. One of the key players that Brooks has to focus on is point guard Russell Westbrook as he was one of the main reasons why the team lost in the playoffs last year. If Brooks is able to get a hold of Westbrook and get him ready for the 2012 season, the Thunder might become one of the most dangerous teams in the league. This will make finding Oklahoma City Thunder tickets very hard, so purchase your tickets now.
